Organization Design: Fashion or Fit?
Published in Digital by Harvard Business School Press (28 June, 2003)
Author: Henry Mintzberg
Average review score:

An excellent guide into organizational structures and design
Henry Mintzberg is Professor of Management Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a Professor of Organization at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. This classic article was published in the January-February 1981 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

In order the discuss and distinguish the five distinct organizational configurations, Mintzberg first discusses the five component parts which make up the whole organization: strategic apex, operating core, technostructure, support staff, and middle line. He then continues with describing how each of these elements cluster into the five configurations. Each of these five configurations (simple structure, machine bureaucracy, divisional form, adhocracy) are discussed in detail, with both their strengths and weaknesses. So how do we need to use these configurations? "... this set of five configurations can serve as an effective tool in diagnosing the porblems of organizational design, especially those of the fit among component parts." Mintzberg uses four basic forms of misfit to show how managers should use it as a diagnostic tool. He emphasizes that especially fit remains an important characteristic. There are excellent graphs, tables, and a great appendix explaining the organizational configurations and component parts. The author concludes that "the point is not really which configuration you have; it is that you achieve configuration."

Yes, this is one of the best articles I have read. It provides a great introduction/framework into organizational structures and design. Mintzberg does not want us to see his introduction as a framework. But I disagree. This article is thorough enough to use as a framework, keeping in mind that larger organizations (can) consist of a mixture of the discussed configurations. For people interested in a further discussion of organizational structures I refer to Henry Mintzberg's 1978-book "The Structuring of Organizations". This article should be compulsory reading for managers and MBA-students. The author uses simple business US-English.

The Organization Parameters
The best book to understand the nature of any organization in business or no business world. Henry Mintzberg give us the elements to detect the sick part in the structure and the way to keep in control every part through parameters.

That's the best tool to use when you want to see your company focused in the structure analysis, to take the actions to align the model. This article is old, but is actual too, then you want to know it.

The other side of the hill : Germany's generals, their rise and fall, with their own account of military events, 1939-1945
Published in Unknown Binding by Cassell ()
Author: Basil Henry Liddell Hart
Average review score:

Last summers read
Yet again Liddel shows quality. Liddel has taken the data from his postwar interviews with german generals, and produced this little gem. - Why did the germans not push earlier and harder towards Dunkirk ? How serious were the plans of an invasion of England ? Spain ? Why the conquest of Norway ? Jugoslavia ? Greece ? The difficulties of raising a discussion on strategy with Der Führer. Mainly comments on all the major strategic desicions, and the generals view on them.

A must read for a die-hard military history fan
Excellent book, partly due to the rare and precious opportunity the anthor had obtained to interview those German generals/prisoners. If you are BH Liddell Hart's fan, "the other side of the hill" seems to be one of his favortie phrase. He used this very phrase as the title of this book, reflecting his fondness of the topic. I just want to point out there is a book titled "German Generals Talk", which is recently published. This book, I suspect, is indeed the famous book "The other side of the hill".

The Oxford Companion to African American Literature
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (April, 1997)
Authors: William L. Andrews, Frances Smith Foster, Trudier Harris, and Henry Louis, Jr. Gates
Average review score:

OUTSTANDING RESOURCE
Everything that you wanted to know or needed to know about African American Literature is contained in this eight hundred page volume. This comprehensive volume covers the historical and cultural contexts of African American literature that has been too long neglected.

Oxford's Companion encompasses the traditional genres of poetry, fiction and drama but goes beyond them. It gives the same analysis to special genres such as Slave Narratives, Oratory, Folk Literature, etc. that you don't normally find in reference works of this kind. These special features and others give this book a unique spot in reference works of literature.

From the moment I got this volume in my hands, I couldn't put it down. Its numerous essays, brief biographies and analysis of the various hues of African American Literature was overwhelming and enjoyable. A referance guide such as this should be in every home. It is user friendly, informative and entertaining. Most of all it will give you a deeper appreciation of the vast types of African American literature produced throughout the years.

An English Graduate Student in Nashville
I purchased this anthology to assist me in my African-American literature class. This book has given me great insight about the literature of African-Americans. Not only does it give great details about the many authors, but it also explains the nature of their many works. I strongly recommend this book to anyone taking an African-American literature course - regardless of the time period.

Parliamentary Law
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (June, 1981)
Author: Henry Robert
Average review score:

A "must" book for the library of serious Parliamentarians !
Parliamentary Law is General Henry M. Robert's (the original author of Robert's Rules of Order) masterwork. The book was only released shortly before his death in 1923. This work is considered to be the good General's definite explanatory treatment of parliamentary procedure. It contains much valuable information available in no other volume, particularly in the "Question-and-Answer" section.

'This book is a "must" for the library of every professional parliamentarian and every serious student of parliamentary procedure.' -- Henry M. Robert III (the grandson of the General and presently a member of the team of authors of the current edition of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised)

'To write a book to meet the wants of those desirous of becoming thoroughly familiar with parliamentary law.' General H.M.R.

I strongly recommend it!

For the serious student of parliamentary procedure. . .
Here, written by Henry M. Robert, author of Robert's Rules of Order, is the most thorough treatment of parliamentary procedure and related subjects available today. It contains hundreds of questions answered by General Robert, and all are applicable to situations encountered every day by members of organizations.

This book is an in-depth treatment of parliamentary law. Anyone wishing to have a complete knowledge of the subject will consider this book an essential component of a complete library.

Pattern in the Material Folk Culture of the Eastern United States
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (June, 1971)
Author: Henry H. Glassie
Average review score:

Landmark Volume in Folklore Studies
This book provides descriptive information on houses, folk art, objects of mirth and merriment, and other forms of material culture from America's Eastern states. The book provides excellent resources for demonstrating how material folk cultural expressions can be studied for clues to regional identity. Glassie then demonstrates that understanding how folk culture is distributed over geographic regions provides clues for studying American history. It is an early study that links folklore to cultural geography and social history, and it provides a great starting point for understanding the scholarship in these areas within subsequent years.

Wonderful book!
I have developed into a strong Henry Glassie fan, having read nearly everything he has ever written. This one book, however, is the catalyst that started my love affair with Material Culture. While I can't reasonably say it changed my life, it did open my eyes to many things in life that would have gone unnoticed by me and I do feel my life is richer for it.

This book opened up a whole world of thought and it seemed to connect all of the cultures and prophecies together in one straight continuous conclusion. You can't read this book without sensing the voice of ancient history speaking to you in the collective conciousness ; the way he breaks down words into various combinations of letters and then compares them with other combinations is absolutely stunning... and then he goes through the same process with entire sentences and takes it a step further and does the same thing with prophecy to prophecy, linking their similarities and draws cultures, prophecies, words, letters, and sentences together until you feel as though you've just found something the whole world should know about...get this book, and GET IT NOW... it's about to unfold right before your eyes.....The grand cross eclipse will be on August 11 ,1999.

Pendulum : the story of America's three aviation pioneers--Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Glenn Curtiss, the Henry Ford of aviation
Published in Paperback by ABC/Jack Carpenter ()
Author: Jack Carpenter
Average review score:

Pendulum . . . by Jack Carpenter
I have read a lot of books about early aviation and especially Glenn Curtiss, and Mr. Carpenter's book is among the best. It has been very helpful to me to put the entire chronology of the Wright brothers and Curtis and the development of flight in perspective because of the way he organizes his information. This book is most helpful when read AFTER a Curtiss biography, such as Roseberry's book on Curtiss.

A Different Perspective on Early Aviation
Pendulum is written for the serious student of early aviation history. Unlike most stories that focus on the Wright brothers' struggles before Dec. 17, 1903, this book delves into what happened AFTER Kitty Hawk.

In 1908 Glenn Curtiss won the Scientific American Magazine trophy for the first public flight in America. It was he, not the Wright brothers, who received instant fame and glory. He built and sold civilian airplanes while they focused on a single sale to the American, British or French Army.

The book explains how early chronicles touted Glenn Curtiss, not the Wrights, as the pioneer of aviation. Thousands of Curtiss JN-4 "Jennys" were used to train WW-I pilots. Today the pendulum has swung to the opposite extreme. Few people know of Curtiss, inventer of the flying boat and father of naval aviation, but everyone has seen the photo of Orville Wright's famous "First Flight" at Kitty Hawk.

In a sometimes dry account, Jack Carpenter meticulously compares step-by-step progress of the three men, with more rare photos than any other book. He tells how they were influenced by Alexander Graham Bell, inventer of the telephone, and Henry Ford, the father of mass produced automobiles.

Having studied the lives of all three men, I think Pendulum is the only book that gives an unbiased account of the bitter patent lawsuit that delayed the growth of American aviation for 10 years.
